Tom Coat founded Coat Publications in 1988 while working as a designer/writer for the San Diego Tribune. Coat left the Tribune in May of 1990 to work fulltime at his new company.

Coat Publications originally mixed Coat's professional journalism skills with newly emerging desktop publishing technology to produce customized, quick-turnaround publications for special events. Focusing on sports events, Coat Publications produced print products exclusively in its early years, including:

  • The AT&T / U.S. Olympic Committee's official 1992 Olympic Summer Games Traveler's Companion.
  • Official spectator guides for the 1988 and 1992 America's Cup regattas in San Diego.
  • Media guides for the 1991 World Sailing Championship and 1988 & 1992 America's Cups in San Diego.
  • A Cup of Controversy, a book about the litigation-marred America's Cup regatta in 1988.
  • Result booklets for a variety of events including the JPMorgan Chase Corporate Challenge, USA Snowboarding National Championships, Isuzu California Ironman Triathlon, and Suzuki Rock 'n' Roll Marathon.

In December of 1996, Coat Publications created its first web site for the Suzuki Rock 'n' Roll Marathon. Within six months, the site had become the most commercially successful in running, attracting well over $500,000 in entry fees and merchandise sales.

Coat Publications later added additional websites, including sites for a Los Angeles film festival, running events, ski races and other groups. The company has focused in recent years on running events, adding online registration and data services to the websites.

Prior to launching Coat Publications, Tom Coat spent 18 years on the staffs of daily newspapers as an editor, writer and designer. He was the managing editor of the Prescott (AZ) Courier, sports editor of the Manassas (VA) Journal-Messenger, assistant city editor of the Clearwater (FL) Sun, copy editor at the Tucson (AZ) Citizen, sports editor of the Tallahasee (FL) Democrat, and lead sports section designer and Olympic sports writer for the San Diego Tribune.
